Episode 46 Shea Dobson

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m stoked to talk about my next guest here today. Shea Dobson is the former Mayor of Ocean Springs. He took down a heavy favorite incumbent mayor in 2016. He did so at a young age with little experience. Not true. Shea had spent ten years in politics by the time he ran. He campaigned in a swing state and talked about real issues with voters whose votes would very much decide an election. Issues strike a different chord with people in swing states.

He presided over a very talented administration in Ocean Springs which was constantly attacked and vilified for outlandish reasons. I’ve personally met all the Alderman in the council. They are nothing short of respectable, forthcoming men. The new council is no less talented, especially with the new talent of Jennifer Burgess of ward one.

Shea and I discuss his time as mayor in Ocean Springs. We also talk about the election cycle—something I didn’t think I would have an impact in. To my surprise this podcast helped many voters identify who they would end up voting for. I was happy to hear that impact. However, the election revealed to me the downside of politics, even at the local level. It seems the media coverage of national politics permeated down to the local level with bad actors on both sides acting vile and divisive. It was a disappointing side displayed by citizens from a community I care so dearly for.

Shea and I also talk about COVID. When Shea was engaging COVID, it was at the onset. There was no one with experience to reach back on for mentorship or guidance. He and his team of Alderman worked diligently trying to find, not balance, but equilibrium in the health and safety of citizens as well as the ability for business to continue to operate. The efforts led to businesses innovating in their ability to serve customers—especially restaurants. Many restaurants were forced into unfamiliar technology spaces which involved shifting to online ordering. Where this once seemed unnecessary or too enigmatic, the practice has now opened new markets and customer bases which do not take up floor space in the restaurants.

As someone who administrated during COVID, Shea continues to be a sounding board for the new administration. He continues to provide advice where he’s requested. He’s smart to let the new administration lead.

Shea also talks about his new organization, Citizens Alliance for Mississippi. The organization is built to help keep state politicians honest with their voter base. His goal is to provide a report card which assesses how the legislatures vote to inform citizens of how their politicians are advocating issues dear to them. It’s an amazing idea.

I’m proud of Shea. I’m fond of his dealings as mayor. He is a servant at heart with a genuine interest in helping people, even if the political atmosphere to care less about the altruistic potential that exists within the political sphere.

I’m sure you’re going to enjoy this episode! Please welcome, Shea Dobson
