Episode 49 Jennifer Sekul Harris
My guest today is running for judge of a youth court here in Mississippi. Her name is Jennifer Sekul Harris. Jennifer is a Biloxi native who has practiced law for over 20 years–primarily in cases involving juvenile issues. Those issues range from representing the interests of the child in a situation of a broken home, to criminal cases, custody battles, and also divorce. Through her private practice, Jennifer has also confronted issues of bankruptcy. All told, she has experience across the entire spectrum of familial issues affecting children, including the financial burdens families go through. Her representation of clients in the youth courts has given her a breadth of experience rarely matched on the entire gulf coast. She isn’t all work though. She’s a community involved mother and wife to a captain in the Ocean Springs police department. As a result, she has a unique perspective of juvenile issues from those responsible for policing a community.
Jennifer and I talk about that perspective. We talk about her ideas for a more robust youth court as well. Through our conversation I gain a better understanding of how our youth courts work, the challenges they face, and the opportunities which exist. I’m thrilled someone of her background, with her motivation, is taking on the pressure of a candidacy in such a sensitive court.
I’m confident she’ll do an amazing job. Everyone please welcome Jennifer Sekul Harris.
