Episode 09 David McVeay

SCP 09 (1).jpg

My guest is David McVeay. David is the father of one of my childhood friends. David comes from a large family in south Mississippi, headed by a patriarch who is a true hero. David’s father was, for the longest time, the most highly decorated veteran in the state of Mississippi.

As we began our conversation, I quickly realized law was not what David was passionate about. David’s eyes told me, while rewarding, his tenure as a judge was not where his passions reside. This led us into a conversation about competition cheer.

David has been the longtime owner of a cheer squad called Jaxco. Many of the young ladies I went to school with cheered there. The conversation became very exciting discussing our experiences in cheer. And yes, I did competition cheer when I was in high school. I was on the squad for a year, but I had strict guidelines on what I would or would not do. I simply didn’t want to dance. I’ve got the rhythm of an out of balance gyroscope.

David also has begun teaching again. Many of the girls he taught as kids are now parents, bringing their children to him for instruction. David has a proven track record of cheer instruction. He started adult classes and even convinced me to come back out there. He is a savant of technique and form. In my first day, I threw a roundoff, back tuck. A standing back tuck, and a front tuck. For those of you unaware of cheer jargon, a roundoff is a sort of cartwheel designed to give you momentum and bound for throwing maneuvers requiring more air. As far as a tuck, replace that with the word, flip. Ya boy still got it!!!

Everyone, please welcome what will be a very entertaining show about two people’s love for competition cheer. Please welcome, David McVeay!

David teaches adult tumbling classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Bow and Arrow Cheer in Gautier, MS. at 7pm. Click the link for Bow and Arrow Cheer for more information.
